We didn't get to Banff until late night on Friday and we could really feel the cold. We had a quick fire and called it a night. I woke up in the middle of the night to the sounds of hundreds of coyotes howling. It was almost magical. There is something about wildlife that just soothes me, well to an extent.
After a good coffee and breakfast we headed to Ha Ling Peak for the day. It was really icy and FINALLY I went and purchased the crampons I so needed after all these years. You think after spending a few weeks each summer on glaciers I would have added this to my list but once I started buying outdoor things for my girl (you know how it is moms out there) crampons suddenly were far at the bottom of my list.
Well let me tell you, The crampons were such a good idea. When you are pulling, carrying, and helping a 4 year old on ice, the one thing you want is stability and well lets face it, crampons worked like a charm! I seen people slide off the switchbacks, I've seen some literally roll down and while a lot of people looked at me with a strange (Why on earth are you wearing these hardcore crampons on Ha Ling) I felt secure and could really help my girl in any situation!
We got so close to summiting that day but with the weather changing and the wind that was blowing her off I didn't want to push it. After all we had to go back for another night camping in a tent and we had another hike planned for the next day.
Someone should have reminded me of that again (that we had another hike the next day!) my wine was sooooo tasty. Until morning!
