Last fall when we started slowing down on our epic summer of hiking and amazing summit views I decided we needed a change for the winter. My girl has always been in the backcountry in the winter but was she ready to ski down epic lines? Obviously not, I'm not either! But she always expressed a love for skiing. She has been watching Ski movies ever since she learned to walk. She lovesssss ski movies! Her favourite movie? Allllll of them she says! Favourite Skier? Angel Collinson.
So, I decided to get us a pass at our local ski resort in Red Deer. Canyon ski resort is located only 8 minutes East of Red Deer and offers 70 acres of Skiable terrain, 18 runs and 6 lifts. Not bad for a non-Mountain ski area!
We have skied there almost everyday that were open this season and we basically count the hours until we get to ski again each day! We are out building epic memories and it feels so good!
As I previously said my daughter had been on skis before in the backcountry but mostly uphill and the only time she really would ski downhill she had skins on. So this year we decided to get her a bundle of private lessons for Christmas instead of buying toys she won't even play with anyways.
She started her lessons on the bunny hill and frankly I was worried she wasn't picking it up and that maybe I would never get to ski past that little hill. But she loved it and was dedicated so we continued. Hard. Often and with smiles on our faces. We lucked out and had one really great instructor who to MJ became so much more. She looked up and trusted her. Even when she was scared and uncomfortable. Mj started getting better and better and started to love it more and more. She started hitting the Terrain Park, started trying new things.
One day MJ saw the Central Alberta freestyle ski club and expressed her interest in joining and to my surprise she did. It all happened so fast. So much has changed in a couple months. Do I miss the mountains? Of course! But let me tell you,l I think this is such an important part in our life right now. After all I dragged her up summits and winter camping in -20c since she has been born and she truly deserves to get a bit of what she really wants now.
My girl went from skiing in the backcountry on skins and literally the bunny hill at the resort to skiing black runs and showing a passion that is beyond imaginable. She is learning so fast at this resort, she is building confidence and skills. And this will only bring us joy in our future trip to the backcountry and mountain resorts.
We have been skiing all season at Canyon and I cannot express how good everything has been. It has that small comfortable but yet awesome feel.
The staff have been so amazing, from the private lessons (with an amazing instructor for kids, who I strongly recommend) to the lifties, ski patrol and basically almost everyone who has been around helping us this season.
We have skied so much and never really had to wait in line. Ever. Except a few nights for maybe 2 minutes and frankly how could that be an issue?
I am so beyond grateful to have a ski hill so close to home. I can just go ski after work, I can ski all weekend...How amazing is that?!? It's pretty amazing! I am so thankful for all the nice people that made it so easy for us to love it there and I am so happy that my girl found people to look up to. From her ski instructor to all the great women skier out there who are such great role models.
Now all I know is MJ is loving it, she is passionate and has great dreams and goals and I am all in. Even if it means that we spend less time in the mountains right now because soon she will be the one dragging me down epic lines. I am so proud of my girl and her dreams. Dream on child.
